"The Disney-fication of movies continues and its not a good thing. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a real let down of a film that is over long, stuffed with too many characters, and as is now the thing for 2017, you can’t have a serious scene, without a character suddenly making a silly joke."
Issues:
It’s not all bad, but its not all good either.
Firstly, let’s chop the entire Finn/Rose plot out, especially them going to get ‘a code breaker’ as it serves no purpose other than to give Finn something to do. Remove this and the film won’t feel so slow and quite frankly, boring.
Secondly, can we please have Luke Skywalker back? This film doesn’t present Luke as the character we came to know over 3 movies. His reactions to things and his motivations for things do not fit with who the character was, and its no wonder Mark Hamill was not impressed when he read the script.
Thirdly, stop with the one liners. Thor Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy really started a trend of silly jokes being forced into scenes that don’t need it. The conversation between Poe and General Hux for instance is pure comic rubbish that doesn’t fit within the style of a true Star Wars movie.
Theres some good action at times, but the logic is missing a lot of the time, and huge ‘character moments’ don’t really work when we haven’t had any time with the character before.
Chewbucca, R2D2 and C3PO might as well be sent away on a ‘secret mission’ that takes them out of the films for a while, because they are absolutely useless in this film.
John Williams provides another great score, but that's expected.
Overall:
The critics are raving, but the fans are divided. The second half of this year has shown us where films are heading, with Thor, Justice League and The Last Jedi. If this is what we can expect in 2018, it’s going to wear thin really quickly!
